"This is our community, together."

MELISSA J. SUPERNOR, LVT (ME), CVT (MA, CT), VTS (SAIM), CFE, CCFP

Melissa SupernorHi Melissa, how are you?

I am doing very well – thank you for asking!

With the election at our heels and the holidays around the corner, in the midst of a global pandemic, what should Technicians be focusing on right now?

This is a difficult one as we are in such challenging times. I feel that we should really making sure we bring positivity and our whole selves to work every day, our patients deserve that, which I know during this time is easier said than done. We need to take care of ourselves and others first and foremost, we cannot “pour” from an empty cup and if we are burning out, we need self-care techniques to help us, especially during these challenging times.

What can we expect from you in terms of conversation and content here in the IGNITE community? What are your goals?

I am bringing 30 years of veterinary life to IGNITE. I would like to help build the community on all aspects from personally and professionally and I plan to bring conversation about YOU, the Veterinary Technician. This is our community together and there will be some new great content along with utilizing the content from the other experts on IGNITE. Let’s build each other and our community up together. I am looking forward to working and chatting with all of you and sharing our time and stories together.

What advice would you give a Technician just starting to learn about the field? Why should they join IGNITE over other education available online for Techs?

One of the best advice I can give other techs is always continuing to learn, always be open to learn something new daily. Ignite is such a wonderful educational tool for everyone on the veterinary team and in our community. I refer to Ignite as my “one stop shop” for everything that is needed for the veterinary teams, such as CE, networking, resources, and positive interactions with the community, where other sites are not always. I have found it as an invaluable tool to utilize each and every day within my professional and personal life.

When did you know you wanted to become a Vet Tech?

As far back as I could remember, I wanted to be in veterinary medicine, working with animals. When I was in high school, I explored my options and decided to start my career as a veterinary technician, maybe in the future being a veterinarian or animal behaviorist. After starting working, I decided that Veterinary Technician was my calling, my passion is working with animals and their families. I attended Becker College, here in Massachusetts, receiving my AS in Vet Tech and my CVT in 1990. About 10 years ago, I started my company, Educational Advocates for the Veterinary Team, where myself and my team brings awareness to the personal and professional development topics through education and resources for everyone within the Veterinary and Animal Communities.
